Like I said, the fort: Warlords is a brand new version of the popular RTS series, focusing on East Asian civilizations for the first time in the franchise. Choose between Japanese, Mongolian, Chinese and Vietnamese and participate in the usual fiefdom way. They occupy the middle ground between logistics and military warfare, creating a delicate balance between a sustainable society and military power. Then finish it off with a beautiful fortress wall to make your city an impregnable fortress.
You can try to get a warlord to join your cause through diplomacy, but it’s much more fun to use brute force.
In addition to a brand new East Asian aesthetic that results in a much more colorful and vibrant graphic style, there is a significant addition included in Stronghold: Warlords is the titular system of Warlord. Think of them as little lines scattered throughout the map. Although they are only a small fish in the middle of the battlefield, they play a crucial role in determining which civilization wins the game and which does not.
You can make these warlords allies by spending diplomatic points, which you use to replenish your reserves regularly, or by using the old-fashioned method: brute force. Kill a warlord on his own tower and he becomes an ally of sorts, perhaps with a direct line to the underworld. You can then click on one of your allied warlords and spend extra diplomacy points to get the bonuses they can offer you, whether that’s extra supplies or a bigger army to help you fight your enemies.
You must provide your citizens with food and clothing and build the most useless fortifications to secure your stronghold, before you decide to advance into the enemy army’s territory with Leroy Jenkins in full force. The game surprisingly teaches you all the mechanics with an excellent tutorial. But if you decide to go for it, the advisor will constantly point out important buildings to build and resources that are missing from your vault, so to speak. Good for beginners and veterans.
Fortress : Warlords represent a balance between logistics and military strategies.
As expected, the fort: There is an active campaign mode for Warlords, as well as the typical direct skirmishes. There is another game mode called Free Build, which essentially turns the game into a Sim City-like city simulation. You are left alone on a map with no enemies, and your goal is simply to build as large a fort as possible while managing the limited resources and needs of your citizens. I didn’t expect to find this fashion here, and I didn’t expect to like it as much as I do.
What I liked best about this fort: Warlords wasn’t just about superior gameplay or multiple modes. I am a big fan of traditional East Asian music and the fusion of these folk genres with contemporary music. One of my favorite contemporary bands, The Hu, describes these fusions perfectly, mixing Mongolian folklore, throat singing and rock.
And that’s actually what the fort is: The Warlords soundtrack is composed of … It’s a mix of East Asian folklore, traditional RTS epic music similar to the Age of Mythology approach, and some light rock beats to make the battles more aggressive and exciting. Nothing like a firefight with a rival faction with a Mongolian neck.
The free-build mode is much more exciting than you can imagine.
There’s only one thing I didn’t like about The Castle: Warlords, and ironically, it also has to do with the sound department. While his soundtrack is impeccable, I did not like his voice acting. Remember the consultant I mentioned a few paragraphs ago? Like almost every other character in the game, he speaks with the most exaggerated and stereotypical Asian accent ever, so much so that the South Park guy in Urban Wok sounds tame by comparison. Too bad, because the rest of the game doesn’t try to be so stupid….. except, of course, that you can rig a bull with explosives and blow it up near an enemy wall.
I wish I had such artistic sensibility to design anchors.
In an era without its own RTS releases, Strongold: Warlords takes off like a breath of fresh air. It appeals to both newcomers with its excellent AI and voice cueing system, and veterans with its in-depth mechanics and countless ways to build the best possible fortress against your enemies. Add in good graphics, a fantastic soundtrack, and a strangely addictive free build mode, and you have one of the best games released so far in 2021. If only the voice wasn’t so horrible ….
The bright colors of East Asia are a breath of fresh air compared to other medieval war simulations. | While the game is more complex than your average real-time strategy title, the user interface, voice-activated hint system, and tutorial are more than enough to familiarize you with the mechanics. The combination of logistics, military action and diplomacy is excellent. |
Fortress: Warlords presents an absolutely fantastic soundtrack composed of Japanese, Chinese and Mongolian folk compositions. With words like that, his voice is incredibly awful. | With its campaign mode, endless possibilities of single-player skirmish modes, and surprisingly addictive free-form building simulator, there’s a lot to like about Stronghold: Warlords. |
