And it is one of the most important reminders of character formation:
It is not always enough to give almost all the information to make them fascinating people. It worked for T.K. of Angel Beats, but he is the exception rather than the rule.
For this list, I classify people in anime who qualify as mysterious.
Some entries fray as more and more episodes are seen, while others remain largely mysterious.
15. koro-sensei
Anime: Attack Class
Let me start with one of the most adorable MC Shunen of all time.
Koro-sensei is a teacher, but he also destroyed part of the moon and turned it into a half-moon forever.
His class must kill him before he destroys the entire planet.
Koro-sensei is tall (compared to his students and the average person), elongated and yellow. He often has this big smile with wide teeth – and you know he’s special because he has cartoon eyes that are actually two dots.
The Assassin class, of course, is home to a very mysterious character.
But it’s Koro-sensei who keeps you in the dark from the first episode. And there are 47 episodes in this great series.
14. ryoji kaji
Anime: Neon Genesis Evangelion
He is not the first or even one of the top ten characters I remember when someone mentions Evangelion.
But it would be a disservice not to include him here.
Yes, from Gendo Ikari to Kaworu Nagisa, everyone is mysterious.
Still, I admire the way the creators established (and initially concealed) the identity of Ryoji, a man who easily falls out of the spotlight when others are on the scene.
Ryoji Kaji is cool, he flirts, he always seems at ease – but there is a palpable unease about his true intentions. He is entangled in a tangle of espionage and personal motives.
Even when Ryoji is out and you already know what he does, his mystique as a person remains.
13) Gene Frericks
Anime: Hunter x Hunter
I remember very well the disappointment and satisfaction when I met Gon’s father in the 1999 adaptation of the anime. Jing Friss is the main reason Gon decided to become a hunter, but all I got from it were glimpses, mostly teasers.
The 2011 adaptation of Madhouse was therefore a very welcome announcement. It provided much more time to solve the mystery of Ging Freecss.
Again, I didn’t like his personality at first.
Frankly, some of his actions are worthy of criticism. One can only imagine what would have happened to Gon if he had not been as assertive as his father.
But looking at his decisions from a different perspective, Gin admirably believes in his son’s ability to improve and achieve his goals no matter what.
12. warm
Anime: Darker than black
Darker than Black could have been one of the best original anime of 2010, but the second season went very differently – and many fans were not happy about it.
On the contrary, I am actually a big fan of the second season.
Overall, it is not as impressive as the first (or even exceptional ATOs). But the sequel has further strengthened Hay as a strong, complex and ultimately human MC, while raising more questions about him and the people (or creatures) in his life.
I don’t yet have a full understanding of his background, or even the organizations he works for or fights against.
Still, Darker than Black is a story compelling enough that the remaining mystery of BC-201 is part of its appeal.
11. Nine and twelve (Sphinx)
Anime: Terror in Resonance
Zankyou no Terror remains my favorite project by Shinichiro Watanabe, despite its notable shortcomings.
The main duet of Nine and Twelve has a plot shrouded in mystery – and yet it feels like it’s only years into the first episode.
You can blame Watanabe’s management and the execution of MAPPA for the success of the series.
These two young men effortlessly evoke feelings of loneliness, pain, anger and longing for something.
The viewer never really knows what it is, but one can somehow sympathize with the Sphinx because her mind seems to wander and she stares into the distance.
I really love this series, and I hope you’ll give it a chance, even if you only like the Nine and the Twelve.
10th Mistogan
Anime: Fairy Tail
Honestly, I’m not a big fan of Fairy Tail.
But the fact that Mystogan was on my list proves that the show did at least one thing right.
He has always been the strangest member of the Fairy Tail Guild, a man who does not want even his comrades to see his face. Mistogan uses sleep magic, but almost all the guild members fall asleep just as he is about to enter.
Nevertheless, it is a valuable member (and a powerful Class S mage) who is very useful in case of emergency.
But then his peers realize his true identity – or are they mistaken? His story is one for the books, and I’ve seen many posts on forums over the years asking for clarification of Mystogan’s true face.
9. Claire Stanfield.
Anime: Baccano!
Baccano is a wild story with an equally wild (and numerous) cast of characters.
Ryohgo Narita, author of a series of light novels, should be proud of this adaptation.
Claire Stanfield is the conductor of the Flying Pussycat Train. He can be handsome, well-dressed and sincere, never hesitating to praise or criticize.
But he is not only a so-called “young conductor” and an enthusiastic “railroad trackman” narrator.
Some shows become extremely stimulating with their great discoveries. But there are times when the most obvious path is the most surprising.
8) Kyon
Anime: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
To be honest, I was confused when my brother first made me watch this Kyoto animated classic.
There were not the usual introductions of characters in the first episode, and it all came across very random to me.
It was at this point that I realized that Haruhi Suzumiya’s Melancholia was first intentionally broadcast in non-chronological order.
It was a strange, but generally pleasant experience.
So it’s normal for Cajon to be the MC, the man who serves as the centerpiece for the viewer. You see, Cajon is also the underdog – but that’s normal.
The author of light novels said he was an ordinary man.
But his real name was never revealed. “Kyung” is just a name her aunt gave her – and similarly, no one knows her sister’s name.
Certain events in the series may make you question his identity and his connection to Haruhi.
7. izaya orihara
Anime: Durarara!!!
Baccano and Durarara have the same author, so it makes sense that there would be another Ryohgo Narita character on my list.
Izaya Orihara exudes freshness and mystery.
Some would say he is unbearably irritating or annoying.
In fact, it is considered one of the best examples of online trolling in the history of anime.
But it’s hard not to like Izayu.
In Ikebukuro, he makes things more interesting for the rest of the cast (that’s how he expresses his love for people), and he has no problem with someone as physically dominant as Shizuo Heiwajima getting angry.
And I love the way he does it as an information provider.
Sixth Kusuriuri
Anime: Mononoke
Toei Animation’s original Mononoke MC series (not to be confused with Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke) is interesting, to say the least.
No one knows what this creature is. It has pointed ears, pale skin and a face that looks more like a cross between a human and a fox.
And you know what’s best?
His name isn’t even Kusuriuri – it’s just the name of a drug dealer. You follow him for 12 whole episodes without knowing such a basic but important detail.
But even with these unanswered questions, I still enjoy watching this man with a bandana and a katana doing his unique thing.
5) Lelouch V Britannia
Anime : Code Gias : Lelouch of the Rebellion
Millions of people already know what an uncompromisingly insane genius Lelouch is.
But what if you were an ordinary citizen in the anime?
From that point of view, we may not find Lelouch as mysterious as he really is. To the masses, it would be impossible for Lelouch to be a masked vigilante.
And that’s the magic of Code Gass.
Here is a man who wanted world peace so badly that he was willing to give up his other identity and make the ultimate sacrifice (with the help of a dear friend). Lelouch is such a well-written character.
4. L
Anime: Death Note
Death Note is not as popular as it was in the second half of the 2000s. But I’m convinced it’s still one of the best shounen anime and thriller series – and that’s thanks to the main characters.
Light Yagami and Lawlite are fascinating personalities.
Whenever these two brilliant minds meet, their battle of wits seems more exciting than the battle scenes involving explosions and falling meteors.
There is no denying it:
L is one of the best detectives in anime history and also one of the most mysterious characters.
Death Note would not be as successful without him. He is now even more popular than Light Yagami.
3. the count of Monte Cristo
Anime: Gankutsu: The Count of Monte Cristo
Yes, it is based on Alexandre Dumas’ 1844 novel. No, it is not from the 19th century.
while Gankutsuo is an adaptation of the book, 5053 does a science fiction project and makes some changes.
What remains, however, are the central themes of the classic novel.
The Count of Monte Cristo takes revenge, although he pays a high price for this opportunity. Nothing compels him to go on living except the slightest chance of revenge.
But there are also messages of trust, forgiveness and self-actualization.
It’s fascinating to watch Earl reveal his true nature to those who think he’s just a ridiculously rich man, while realizing that his own fate may not exactly be set in stone.
2. Johan Libert
Anime: Monster
Monster is a cold and terrifying show.
It is a story told in 74 masterfully choreographed and exciting episodes – and Johan Liebert is key to its recognition.
John almost died when he was young, he was shot in the head and had to have emergency surgery.
Fortunately, Dr. Kenzou Tenma, a neurosurgeon, saved his life. He had to operate on the mayor, but he wanted to ease his conscience and save the man.
Dr. Tenma’s reputation has been temporarily damaged by this decision. But he did the right thing, didn’t he?
Then things take a diabolical and violent turn and so Dr. Tenma (and you, the viewer) must try to unravel the psyche of Johann Libert, even though that seems like a lost cause.
1. Iwakura line
Anime: Experiments in Lain series
Here is the essence of this legendary series from the same period as Neon Genesis Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop :
When you have completed all 13 episodes, you will still have burning questions about Lane Iwakura and the world around him.
No spoilers will make you question Lane and his actions. It is a testament to the perfection of the writing and the perfection of the listening and viewing experience of the series.
If you have studied digital technology and its psychosocial implications, delve into religious and philosophical discussions.
Lane looks like any other awkward Japanese teenager.
But no one is really like her – no one in the anime has the mystique that she has.
