I was at Universal Studios in Japan yesterday and to my surprise was admitted to Super Nintendo World (the February 4 opening was postponed due to the emergency).

They missed us in their technical dress rehearsal and soft opening.

The whole park was pretty empty due to limited capacity, but Super Nintendo World was pretty full. Still, the Mario Card Coop Challenge only lasted 30 minutes.

Super Nintendo World

I don’t know if we’ve talked about this before, so if anyone has questions, I can answer them as best I can.

Edit: Add additional information

First, I speak as a lover of video games and amusement parks, as the experience of both certainly colors the impact of the earth.

We went straight to Super Nintendo World because the announcement said anyone who wanted to should go to Waterworld.

The park had just opened, so the entrance to Super Nintendo World was not yet reserved.

The road to SNW is between the Waterworld show and the attraction Jaws (a clone of the attraction in Florida).

You can see the giant battle in the videos of the original concept and in Miyamoto’s livestream. It leads into a small room with portraits of Mario64 on either side, and the world opens up before you.

First impressions: I got very emotional. Nintendo Classical Music. This kind. In recent years, I have watched this country grow by jumping off the top of other attractions.

Second edition: It’s pretty small. But tight. All conceptual art shows it. All the way to the hidden Pikmin. It’s very lively, and everything moves, from coins to gumba/curibo and piranha/pakkun plant.

I mention the Japanese names because they are the standard here, which is why the MK attraction is called Koopa Challenge.

Since Mario Karta: Coop’s challenge was the main attraction, we accepted it. The waiting time was about 30 minutes.

The line was long. Everything was in. This work was deep and very thematic. The first thing you’ll see is the stairs leading up to the giant statue of Bowser.

There are several rooms that you pass through. My favorite details were

Large lamp.

You get an online map explaining the mechanics of the race, including how to put on your helmet and how to win the game (by defeating the Koopa/Bowser).

Then you get your Mario hats. It’s a hard plastic visor (a little uncomfortable for my big head). The rear screen (which is attached to your seat) attaches magnetically to your visor.

The story: Bowser has challenged Mario to a go-kart race!

The Bowser Challenge

Rough literal translation: Listen carefully, Mario! Come to my castle for a go-kart race. I’ll wait. Don’t run away. Bwahaha!

You win the race when you receive 100 coins. You can touch the power bar with the steering wheel. I assume he’s depositing the coins you collected around the world.

Driving experience: I hear it’s controversial, but I’ve tried to avoid spoilers as much as possible. Apparently there are angry fans too? I never saw them, but now that I’ve crossed over, I understand why.

I liked it. But I was glad I didn’t have to pay extra for a Universal Express Pass to get in.

Yes, the rumors and the video are true, it’s not a fast race. Not at all. And that can be very frustrating. (Me too.)

But after thinking about it, I thought it was important to think about what Universal and Nintendo are trying to do and what they have to work with.

USJ in Osaka. It’s not like Orlando where they have all the space in the world/the Everglades to expand. It is located in the city of Osaka itself, so the area and attractions are quite small.

Second, the lack of speed seems to be due to poor design.

It’s an interacting family attraction. The emphasis is on interactivity. This attraction is designed to be fun for even the smallest fans.

If it’s too fast, you can’t play well. (I noticed the same problem with Biohazard: The Real Haunted Maze a few years ago. Because it was interactive, the zombies were slower to give you a chance to take them down).

Also, because of RA, they can’t put the outside part of the attraction because they can’t operate the lights. There is also a general lack of space.

My overall impression is that it looks like an advanced version of those dark Fantasyland attractions with judicious use of screens, and AR.

Does AR work well? It’s up to you and how you set your sights. Graphics range from Super Mario 3D World-style stamps to 3D models.

You aim by moving your head, and when you look at the wheel, you see the number of pieces and turtle shells you’ve collected.

As a frequent visitor to amusement parks, this is not the biggest or most impressive attraction I’ve ever done. As a player, you’re nowhere near ready for a real Mario Kart game. (Toy Story Mania/Midway Mania is a better video game for horseplay. I haven’t been to Galaxy’s Edge yet, so I can’t say anything about their rides).

But my friends who are not players really liked it. They wanted to wrap it up and had made reservations to return to the area later.

The experience was much better the second time around. And I was able to enjoy all the clever technology that goes into this beautiful attraction.

More than Mario Kart, the real appeal is the world itself. Did you touch him? The OR was much more fun than I thought it would be. I was surprised to see that they had to physically beat him to get him to sign. (There is a rubber M for perception).

Under the block?

So many of them? Blocks throughout the neighborhood and no lines for them. All you have to do is walk up to them and hit them. The advantage is that they vary in size, so most adults (not the size of an NBA player) have to jump to make contact.

In other challenges, such as. B. Pow Blocks, you have to line up for your shot. I tried to challenge Bowser Jr. but was told I didn’t have all the keys I needed to qualify for him. I’ll try again in early March.

Yoshi’s car was really cute. And if you liked Yoshi Island, I’m sure you’ll like your music too. Unfortunately, it was too short.

On our second visit of the day, I noticed this closed door at the back of the neighborhood.

Closed doors

Trees look very different from other land trees and have a certain, perhaps whimsical, tropical flair.

So, if/when the pandemic is over, should you book a flight to Osaka? It depends if your main and only goal is to attend Super Nintendo World or not. However, if this is just one of the many elements of your (hypothetical) itinerary, it is well worth a visit.

2020 will satisfy both classic and modern players. To be included in the list, the game must be confirmed for 2020, or there must be a compelling reason to release it in that year. Upcoming games that are only announced and do not have a major release date are therefore not eligible.

By 2020, there will be a lot of… in the world of video games. Here are fifteen games waiting for you in the first half of 2020.
