Cribbage is best enjoyed between two people, but four people can also play the game. A complete set of 52 cards is needed for the game where Ace is given the lowest rank, and King gets the highest grade.

But the main question is Cribbage hard to learn, or is it an easy game? Certainly, Cribbage is an easy game, but if you are not aware of the rules on how to play Cribbage, you may not understand how to play even if you watch others play.

Here we’re discussing easy instructions for playing Cribbage in this post.

Learn to Play Cribbage

The Deal

After the cards are laid for the game, any player other than the dealer will cut the deck. A random card is then kept in the upside-top part of the deck, known as the starter.

If the Jack is the starter card, it is called His Heels, where 2 points will be allotted to the dealer. While playing the game, players do not use a starter card, but it can be used later in the game to score points.

The Gameplay

After reversing the starter, the non-dealer puts one of the cards face-up. Next, the dealer will show the card and then the non-dealer. The cards must be shown alternatively, except during the Go. The players must keep the cards separated from other players in the game.

As the game proceeds, the players must add the last card to the played card and announce the total running pips.

When playing Cribbage for dummies, remember that the count for Jacks, Kings, and Queens is 10. In contrast, the value of other cards is equal to their numeric value.

The Go

The total number of running cards should not be 31 in the game. The opponent gets the point if the player fails to show cards without the sum of the values adding up to more than 31. If a player has a value of more than 31, they should say “go.” And the opponent must put down a card simultaneously even if their cards do not have a sum of more than 31.

Players are eligible to get more points by making pairs and runs. The next round starts with 0 and is led by the player who says “go.” Players cannot combine the lead with any other card they played before and add to the score.

One point is given to the player who has played the last card after the go. Also, if the card adds up to become exactly 31, they get an additional point.

What is Pegging?

While playing Cribbage, the players must aim to get two points with the peg. It can be done by:

  • Adding a card that brings a total to 15, pegging 2
  • Adding a card having the same rank as the card just played will also peg 2
  • The face cards will pair only with a similar face card. For example, a queen will pair with a queen and not with a jack
  • Adding a third card of the same rank will peg 6
  • Add a fourth card of the same position that will peg 12

Run Sequence

  • If the sequence is 3, pegs will also be 3
  • If the line is 4, pegs will also be 4
  • If the series is 5, pegs will also be 5

What are Counting Hands?

The players could put three hands in order as the game finishes. The first hand is non-dealers, the next is the dealer’s hand, and the last is the crib. Remember the order because the non-dealer can win the game before the dealer starts counting their hand.

After counting, if the non-dealer scores less than the dealer, they become the winner.

How Does the Game End?

Depending on your preference, you can play the Cribbage game for 61 points or 121 points. When playing Cribbage with two players, the winner is the player who earns the agreed-upon points first.

The game ends immediately if the non-dealer leaves the game. Also, the dealer won’t get any points in his hand or the crib. Furthermore, if a player wins a game before the loser earns half of the required winning points, the winner is seen as a winner of two games.

Strategy to Play

  • Players need to learn to count the Cribbage hands correctly.
  • When you learn Cribbage, remember that you must always discard the best cards in the crib as a dealer. You must keep good cards in hand to score more points. But if you’re the non-dealer, one of the basic rules for playing Cribbage suggests not to put your best cards in the crib.
  • In addition, the non-dealer must avoid showing fives as dealers can easily create a 15 using 10, J, K, or Q.
  • Similarly, non-dealer must avoid showing a pair, especially sequential cards.
  • As King and Ace are good cards, you must only put them in the crib if you can’t use them.
  • Non-dealers must also avoid making a count of 21 because dealers can add a 10 to make it 31.

Conclusion

Cribbage is an interesting game, which seems a bit difficult at first. But once you know the ins and outs of this game, you can understand if Cribbage or Backgammon is easier to learn.
