Next month, Netflix will release the first live-action adaptation of Avatar, the highest-grossing movie of all time. The live-action adaptation of the beloved animated film, Avatar, has finally been confirmed by Netflix. The streaming service has not yet revealed the cast, but a number of actors have already been linked to the project, including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver.

Netflix has verified casting speculations for the main characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender’s live-action adaptation. Aang will be played by Gordon Cormier, while Katara will be played by Kiawentiio Tarbell. Sokka, Katara’s domineering elder brother, will be played by Ian Ousley, with Prince Zuko being played by Dallas Liu. Albert Kim will serve as executive producer, writer, and showrunner for the adaptation. Kim has been in programs such as Nikita and Sleepy Hollow. Kim made the following statement:

“Let’s fast forward.” It has been 15 years. Netflix has offered me the chance to work on a live-action version of ‘Avatar,’… ‘Why?’ was my initial thinking. What might I say or do with the tale that wasn’t stated or done in the original?’ Over the past decade and a half, ‘A:TLA’ had only increased in popularity and praise, which is a testimony to how full and powerful a narrative experience it had been. Why repair something that isn’t broken? However, the more I considered it, the more interested I got. VFX technology has progressed to the point that a live-action adaptation can not only accurately reproduce what was done in animation, but also add a new visual depth to a fascinating universe. We’ll be able to observe bending in a manner we’ve never seen before, in a genuine and visceral way.”

My hopes for this project aren’t very high. I was skeptical when it was initially announced. When original Avatar creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino dropped out due to creative differences, I lost all faith in this show. I get what Mr. Kim is saying about the advancement of visual effects, but I don’t think Avatar can accurately be translated to live-action. Moreover, I don’t think that should be a goal people have. Avatar is my favorite TV series, and I think it would be just short of impossible to match it, let alone improve on it overall. There are individual episodes that perhaps should have been left out, or an animation error here and there. But I think despite not being without flaws, Avatar is a perfect show in the sense that it accomplishes – and frequently exceeds – its goals. Avatar is an intelligent, emotional, and deeply satisfying experience when viewed from start to finish. This is because of the impressive, continually improving animation and its complex characters and intriguing themes. I don’t understand what would be added by the live-action medium, but I can easily imagine what would be lost, and it’s not worth it. I still plan to watch this show and analyze it, but I don’t expect to like it.

Live Action Avatar Cast

I’m not familiar with the actors, so I’m not sure how well-suited they are to the parts. So there’s that. I believe Cormier and Liu are good fits for Aang and Zuko. I’m just going to leave it at that Tarbell and Ousley don’t have the appropriate appearance for Sokka and Katara. It’s difficult to have strong feelings about casting announcements when we already know that this show won’t be in the same vein as Avatar. Rumors circulated that the characters would be aged up, that Katara would be paired with Zuko instead of Aang, and other such silliness. Rumors should always be taken with a grain of salt, but the casting rumors were surprisingly accurate. I’m more than dreading this series, but I feel obligated to watch it because of what it’s associated with. The more we hear, the more I wish this team was working on their own original program. Avatar is a one-of-a-kind program, particularly among animated fantasy shows for kids. I can’t fathom a remake capturing the appropriate tone and mood, much alone conveying such serious topics in a manner that both children and adults would understand and appreciate. The previous live-action adaptation of Avatar was a complete catastrophe. It should have been the last effort of its kind.

What are your thoughts on the casting? Do you have high hopes for this remake? Please let us know in the comments section below!

Netflix has announced that it will be producing a live-action show based on James Cameron’s 2009 film Avatar. The streaming service already has a live-action show based on the Terminator franchise, but that one is animated. However, there is a live-action show based on Stephen King’s novel ’11/22/63′ in the works, so perhaps this is the first of a new trend..
