The Elite Dangerous community had an interesting week. With the last two releases, Frontier development team has been touting the Beta 2.3 update, designed to improve the performance of the game’s servers and client. At the time of writing this, around 17 hours later, the update is still a big thing on the community’s mind.
Elite Dangerous is a game that aims to copy the “gold rush” mentality of an old time era sci-fi classic. It’s a game so immersive, where you can take the role of a galactic trader in the year 3302, and you’re in command of a fleet of ships.
The Elite Dangerous community has been in turmoil—or, at least, the vast majority of the community is. For the past week, the in-game forums have seen almost daily posts from people who are upset with Frontier Developments, the game’s developer. The complaints are varied, but many center on a server-side bug that is apparently affecting the game’s multiplayer mode. The bug has caused Frontier to silence a number of players for no good reason, and has also resulted in the deletion of their accounts.
Frontier Developments CEO David Braben attended the Elite:Forums Dangerous conference to update the community on the current issues with the Odyssey expansion. Braben began by explaining what caused the game’s servers to crash in the early days of Odyssey, noting that the source of the problems was the operation of the float carriers: There are floaters on the Odyssey and Horizons servers, and when they jumped into the water with other players, it resulted in large amounts of data being transferred unnecessarily between servers. As readers will note, Fleet Carriers has since recovered, and Braben notes that the number of server outages has dropped significantly despite record competition. As for the performance issue, Braben says the team is working on the problem, but he also points out that it’s a much bigger challenge that may take a little longer to solve. Incidentally, the performance issues on powerful computers could be processor-related, but Braben promises that the developers will find a solution with the help of the community. More information on how FDev will tackle Odyssey will be available in the roadmap, which will be released on June 4. Meanwhile, Braben apologized again for the problems with the expansion, asked the community for patience, and tried to offer some perspective on what Elite is trying to do with Odyssey. It’s not a static arena shooter where all players join at the beginning, but where players constantly join, leave, travel between servers alone or in groups, and more, Braben writes. It is unfortunate that this incredible achievement is somewhat overshadowed by the problems we see. I mean, it’s not every day you see a game bring back an extinct tech from the Fifties, but that’s what the developers of Elite Dangerous did with the legendary Millenium Falcon.
