While the artificial intelligence race to create the most human-like robot continues to heat up, Tesla co-founder Elon Musk has his own idea of where we should be heading. During a recent interview, Musk stated that he is working on a humanoid robot designed to operate as a “part-time” employee, complete with a salary, insurance, and perhaps even retirement benefits. Musk, who has already created a robotic exoskeleton called the “Baxter”, said that he would like to create an employee who could lift up to 150 pounds and have the intelligence of a human.
Elon Musk just unveiled his latest creation: a “Tesla bot” that can deadlift 150 pounds. Musk posted a video of the humanoid prototype lifting a weight and the caption “Just upgraded my Tesla with LIDAR and VISION. Like having a second set of eyes. Now the real fun begins!”
Last night, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced that his company is working on its own “robot butler” that will someday work alongside humans. This is one of Musk’s many grand claims about the future of humanity, and most of the time he is right. This time? Not so much.

Numerous science fiction films and computer games, such as Quantic Dream’s outstanding Detroit: Beyond Human, have teased a future inhabited by humanoid robots capable of accomplishing everything their creators can, and more. Elon Musk, it seems, will be the first visionary entrepreneur to make this a reality.
Or, at least, that’s what Tesla CEO Elon Musk said of his company’s artificial intelligence advances at a livestreamed event Friday night.
Musk said at the event that Tesla will be developing a new product dubbed the “Tesla Bot.” This will be a 125-pound humanoid robot with cutting-edge AI technology and autopilot hardware that can walk up to 5 MPH, carry 45 pounds, and deadlift 150 pounds, according to one of the presentation’s slides. Its goal is to reduce hazardous, dull, and repetitive activities.
Musk claims that a prototype of the Tesla Bot would be released as early as next year, but that hasn’t prevented critics, including some of the world’s most famous robotics specialists, from believing that this is simply another of Musk’s massive trolling efforts.
This is partially thanks to Musk’s weird decision of having a guy dressed in a Tesla Bot costume dancing to dubstep music at the beginning of the event, which seemed to downplay the legitimacy of the whole announcement. And while the presentation did gain some credibility thanks to a Q&A period with a team of engineers, it is hard to believe that Tesla could accomplish something so incredibly advanced in such a short period of time.
