What is lightning? Will fans of the usual Treyarch adopt Zombies map like they did with The Machine and Firebase Z? While it’s impossible to know everything before the game mode is released, we have some good clues about the kind of experience you’ll have playing this game. Here’s what we know about Flash in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War zombies so far.
How does the epidemic fit into the history of zombies?
Treyarch confirmed in a blog post that The Flash is set in the Urals in Russia, a place that was heavily teased in Firebase Z and also features a bit in The Machine. This area has the largest concentration of portals connecting the world to the Black Ether, the area where the zombies and other horrors of this story originated. From what we saw in the reveal trailer, and from the various clues on the map of Firebase Z, we can assume that this game mode takes place after the events of Firebase Z, which means that we will likely encounter Ravenov again. As in the previous maps, we play as a Requiem Strike team, trying to stop the Omega Group from improving Dark Aether and using it for their own purposes. The numbers on Z-base tell us that the Omega Group knows Requiem is going to station an attack force there, and that they’re using the area to distract us from something. Of what we don’t know yet.
What comes back to flash?
The flashback seems to be somewhat inspired by Call of Duty’s Battle Royale Blackout mode: Black Ops IV. In this mode, Triarque has blended many aspects of his games to create a huge map that is both iconic and understandable. In Outbreak, you’ll notice strange things that look familiar. On the one hand, the zombies seem to have been drawn from various Treyarch zombie maps from the past. So we see individual zombies with barbed wire around their corpses, as on the Death and Blood of the Dead cards, set in the twisted reality of Alcatraz prison, perhaps in the dark ether. The trailer also shows a zombie wearing a Santa hat at the end, a reference to the Christmas fashion in The Machine. Don’t be surprised if we see more zombies removed from previous maps because of this large-scale debacle.

We also know that some zombie leaders are returning to The Flash. At the beginning of the trailer, a simulator of the firebase Z is shown, and a Panzer Soldier from Origins, The Iron Ash and Revelation flamethrower appears. We’ll have to wait and see if any other heavy zombies like Mangler or Brutus appear when the map is published. Don’t be surprised if we see the return of the Horde from Fire Base Z. They may be the last final boss on this map, but they also appeared in The Machine and seem to be related to the Black Ether and may want to protect it or expand it into the normal world.

Zombies aren’t the only recurring aspects of past maps we see in the trailer. You recognize the dragon heads of the Iron Dragon in Call of Duty : Black Ops III has been connected to a device multiple times. Just like in the past, you have to kill the zombies and feed their dragons to make these machines work. We don’t know what these machines do yet.

What is the size of the exploded card?
As the trailer progresses, you’ll notice that the environment alternates between a snowy and a normal fall environment. All these pictures were taken on the same map, but probably in different places. In Firebase Z you start the game in a small village and then teleport to a location on the other side of the mountain. Again, it is likely that players will jump between portals to see more remote areas of the Ural Mountains. Probably between a small town and a ski resort. According to the leaks made about Outbreak, this mode is essentially an open world zombie mode with plenty of room to use vehicles (zombies first).
Are we going back to the Black Ether?

In The Machine, the journey between the Black Ether and the map version of the normal world was an integral part of the main Easter Egg, and was also used for some of the secondary Easter Eggs. It looks like players will have the ability to travel through the Black Ether, but only on limited occasions. Inside the caravan, we see a dark room that looks like the Black Ether, and the player is likely fighting for survival before returning to the normal world through a portal in the doorway. It seems that fighting zombies in these small areas will contribute to some sort of objective on the map.
Why do we need monkeys?

At one point in the trailer, monkeys can be seen in an all-terrain vehicle guiding players through the forested areas on the map. Players will use it to find dimensional portals. While some may think it’s a coincidence, the monkeys seem to have a connection to the Black Ether. If you go to the Black Ether in The Machine, you can find ghost monkeys everywhere. It was impossible to communicate with them, but they were very clear. Using a monkey to find portals will affect history going forward.

While the game trailer has given us a lot of answers about this new way to experience Treyarch’s Call of Duty zombie experience, there are still some burning questions. Why exactly in the Urals are the greatest breakthroughs of the portals of the Black Ether? What does the Omega Group do while we’re at it? We’ll likely get answers to at least some of these questions when the map is released, but it’s also likely that Treyarch will leave us with even more questions after the release.

Will there be executions of black officers during the Cold War?
Treyarch clearly learned a lot in 2019 and wisely integrated it into their game. The activation confirmed that the runtime feature will return in the next Call of Duty game, Black Ops Cold War. The performances were highly operator-specific, which meant we had different results for different characters.
