I love the new edition of Warhammer 40k and I love it because it is so different to the warhammer armies I have grown up with. Instead of fighting hordes of faceless orks and tyranids, it’s a game of tactics and positioning. I have spent the past few months collecting a list of my own, and I’d really like to share them with you all.
I am a Games Designer at Adepticon, an annual gaming convention in Madison Wisconsin. Adepticon is a unique convention held in the heart of Middle America. The convention includes hobby gaming, tabletop war games, board games, and LARP. This year’s convention was held in November, and was filled with successful lists from many of the top war game and RPG companies in the industry.
40k is a tabletop wargame where your characters are represented by three six inch plastic figurines. Tabletop wargames are not for everyone; to enjoy them a lot of people have to have a lot of patience. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned while running Flying Monkey Con, it’s that there are a lot of people who love tabletop wargames.
The Flying Monkey Con Winning Lists for the Warhammer 40k competition are now available. With 85 people, the Warhammer 40k Major GT in Wichita, Kansas was another triumph. The tournament featured random pairings rounds 1-3 to combat submarining at Flying Monkey Con, the practice of intentionally scoring lower to avoid harder opponents. Granted, winners still had to compete against winners, but the goal was to push people to get their best possible scores.
New Orks were permitted to attend Flying Monkey Con and even played at the top table, but it was Drukhari who won the game with a Drukhari, Admech, and more Drukhari spread.

1st Place on the Flying Monkey Con Winning List!
Matt Root took first place at Flying Monkey Con. He’s been to the top of Flying Monkey Con before, and he packed a list to help him get there. Have you noticed how all of the transporters are Dark Techonomancers? This is so that the Dark Lances may reap the benefits of the All Consuming Coven. A +1 to hit and a +1 to wound, to be precise. Anything less tough than a Knight on a 2+ will be wounded by the lances. At AP-4, with Damage 4+D3 weaponry. The Cronos Spirit Vortexes have a lot of blast and may benefit from the Coven Trait, thus they’re good against Admech blobs or other hordes. Because these troops are coven, Lightning Reflexes will not function on them.
Overview of the Warhammer 40k First Place List
Furthermore, this list counters Admech chicken walkers with +2 movement on the Reaver Jetbikes for 20” moves. The 60 point unit is more than fast enough to tag Ironstriders, due to loss of core on these units. Along with the means to turn off overwatch and prevent units from falling back Mr Root can lock down shooting armies easily by turn 2. Congrats to Matt.

Second Place on the Flying Monkey Con Winning List!
Coming in Second place was another Matt. Matt Evans with the dreaded 6 Admech Flyers list. Running this army requires 3 detachments in order to take all the flyers and the cheapest way to do that CP wise is to do a triple patrol. Mars takes the loss of that CP fairly well with an innate reroll to hit. Furthermore, they can benefit from Canticles such as Benediction of the Omnisiah for offense, or Shroudpsalm for defense depending on the go first roll off.
Second Place Overview of the Warhammer 40k Winning List
There are two methods for falling back and shooting, but neither will be necessary for all of the Aircraft. This saves 120 points since all of the aircraft have command uplinks. The Stratoraptor is obviously a gunship with rerolls and Damage 3+D3 Lascannons, but the Fusilaves are equally dangerous. Assume they’re flying above a two-vehicle squad. On a 4+, that’s ten opportunities to deal a fatal wound, easily neutralizing other Adeptus Mechanicus. Perhaps a Raider with Cult of Strife Blood Brides is nearby. With the mid-move turn with the flyers, all three of them may easily cross over that raider with the aim of opening the transports with 6 chances at a fatal wound each at a 4+. You can access to the delicious insides after the transport pops.
The list is generally quick enough to play Engage on All Fronts and/or Retrieve Octarius Data. The flyers may also compensate for the squads’ absence of Data Tethers. This is shown by being unbeaten for six rounds.

3rd Place in the Flying Monkey Con Winning List
With Charlie Andre’s army, Drukhari rounded out the Top 3. He chose the Obsidian Rose, as did the majority of Drukhari players. The additional 6” range and one-wound re-roll, coupled with the Raiders’ speed, make it difficult not to select this Kabal. Because the Blasters are now available in a 24” range, you’ll see it among other Drukhari classics. The Cult of Strife Succubus, Wyches, and at least three patrols that don’t require Command points, to name a few. All of them have enough transportation to get their troops to safety. So you’ll need a strategy while attending events to deal with Drukharii and Admech.

Their secondaries are also a big factor for their success. If you castle too far away from the prey, they will punish you, but they are quick enough to engage on all fronts. This also lends itself to them completing Retrieve Octarius Data for a simple 12 point bonus. The raiders’ melee potential is used by Charlie’s troops.
One drawback of this kind of list is how quickly Grind Them Down points may be lost, or how easily characters serving as missiles can be lost.
