The Halo franchise is in a weird place right now. After a pretty wild rollercoaster of a few years, the last Halo game, Halo 5: Guardians, completed the series’ 6th installment, and it concluded a long and ongoing campaign for the Master Chief. Then, the next Halo release was announced, Halo Infinite, and the game’s developer, 343 Industries, has revealed that the game won’t feature any campaign co-op or Forge.

The next Halo is very much in the works, and it’s slated for release in 2020. 343 has confirmed the upcoming Halo game is focusing more on multiplayer than campaign. It won’t have co-op or Forge mode, which might be a bummer for some fans.

According to the official Halo Infinite listing on the Xbox Store, the game will feature no campaign co-op or Forge mode at launch. The listing, which was last updated on June 6, 2018, uses a combination of quotes from the game’s multiplayer trailer, an official Halo Infinite website quote, and Microsoft’s Play Anywhere branding. The campaign mode for Halo Infinite will be a Warzone mode that will allow up to four players to play through the story mode against AI enemies in a campaign-like experience. Halo Infinite will also feature a new competitive mode called “Forge”, which will allow players to create their own custom multi-player maps.

Since the first Halo game, Halo: Combat Evolved, in 2001, campaign co-op has been a standard element in almost every Halo game. Unfortunately, 343 Industries’ newest edition, Halo Infinite, will violate that tradition.

In an August development update, Bungie alum and creative director Joseph Staten announced that Halo Infinite will debut without a campaign co-op option. This implies that players who want to dive right into Master Chief’s new narrative against the Banished (an ex-Covenant mercenary group headed by Jiralhanae warmaster Atriox) will have to do it on their own.

Staten said that campaign co-op is being postponed so that his team at 343 Industries can concentrate on finishing the game’s single-player and multiplayer modes in time for the Christmas release. That’s reasonable, given that Halo Infinite was scheduled to debut on November 10, 2020, with the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles.

Unfortunately, Forge will not be available in Halo Infinite. Forge is a popular game feature that enables Halo enthusiasts to create, store, and share maps for custom games. It was first introduced in Halo 3 for Xbox 360 in 2007.

“Unfortunately, as we concentrated the team for shutdown and really focused on a great experience for launch, we had to make the very difficult choice to postpone delivering campaign co-op for launch,” Staten said. “We also took the difficult decision to postpone delivering Forge beyond launch.”

Staten goes on to say that owing to save systems and other complications, creating a campaign mode with co-op is more difficult than it seems.

He said, “On the co-op side, we have the option to play the campaign all the time; it’s this beautiful, open, non-linear take on the Halo game.” “It’ll give you a lot more freedom to knock down Banished bases from various perspectives and advance through the game in your own way.”

“On the other hand, that’s difficult. When you consider save systems and all of the technology that is required to drive this more non-linear experience, it becomes even more complex in the co-op experience.”

Join 343 Industries team members for a conversation on important lessons from the latest Multiplayer Technical Preview, updates on Halo Infinite’s overall development, and what to anticipate at launch.

According to a recent report, Halo Infinite will not be featuring campaign co-op or Forge World at launch. This is a big departure from the franchise’s previous games, which have always featured some form of cooperative or competitive gameplay. Of course, the news comes from a source that is notoriously unreliable, so it should be taken with a grain of salt..
