Agriculture plays an important role in almost every survival game, and in Valheim you can take advantage of this.
Most crops can be used to produce food and other consumables you need to survive in the harsh conditions of Valheim.
Currently, there are few seeds that you can plant including vegetables, plants and tree seeds.
All of our Walheim travel guides can be found here https://progametalk.com/valheim/.
When can you start farming?
Growing or planting seeds is relatively easy, as it can be done after defeating the first boss of Valheim, Eiktar.
The victorious Eiktyr provides you with hardwood, which you can use to make a pickaxe to grow copper and tin.
They need copper and tin to make the bronze cultivator, a tool used in agriculture in Walheim.
Of course, you need a smelter to melt the metals used to make the blacksmith’s cultivator.
For a guide to cast iron production, see our Guide to Valheim Cast Iron Production.
Make a cultivator
Maybe you already have several different kinds of seeds with you and now you’re wondering what to do.
You must first make a bronze cultivator (made of copper and tin in a forge).
A cultivator is a Walheim tool that allows you to do all kinds of work with soil, seeds, crops and even trees.
Once you have made your cultivator, you can work points on the ground so you can plant seeds.
Seed
Planting seeds is very easy. Simply choose the seeds you want to plant and place them on the tilled soil.
The seeds you plant should be planted a certain distance apart, otherwise they will take longer to grow due to lack of space.
Planting seeds uses them from your stock, and some vegetables or crops can be replanted to increase their numbers or provide seeds.
The following is a list of seeds that can be grown in Walheim:
- Carrots (root plant for 1 carrot)
- Carrot seed (root plant for 3 carrot seeds)
- Red beetroot (beetroot seeds for 1 red beet)
- Turnip seed (for 3 turnip seeds)
- Barley (planting together with barley to double the amount of barley)
- Flax (plant with flax to double the amount)
Seed growth
It will take some time for the seeds to grow, and you may need a few days to continue or just sleep all day.
In fact, you can skip the day by falling asleep at night, which can be a quick way to speed up the game.
There must be enough space between some plants, otherwise the status indicates that the plant cannot grow due to lack of space.
Even if there is not enough room for a plant, if others have grown alongside it, it will eventually grow.
It just takes longer for plants to grow when they’re close together, and as long as you’re doing something else, that’s fine.

Harvest
Once the plant is fully grown, you can harvest it by playing with it and picking it up by lowering it to the ground.
Harvested plants that are on the ground will go into your inventory if they are in range.
Instead of having to repeatedly press the same button to harvest, you can simply hold down the button, point it at the plants and walk past them to harvest them easily.
Tree planting
Trees are also planted using a cultivator, but they don’t need to be planted in tilled soil, and you can just plant them as long as you have the seeds.
There is a wide variety of trees in Walheim, but not all of them leave seeds for transplanting. Below are seeds you can plant to grow trees:
- Beech seed (beech)
- Pine cone (fir)
- Pine cone

Verdict
If you are able to grow your own crops, it will give you a significant advantage in Valheim because you will not have to rely on them as much from that point on.
Carrots and beets are great ingredients for mid- or late-night meals, and can easily be grown to provide you with a big batch of carrot soup or beet stew.
This will save you money on more expensive ingredients to use later in the game.
More crops are expected to come to Valheim soon, which may happen in future updates.
