At the mobile games conference GDC (Game Developers Conference) in San Francisco last week, I had the pleasure of attending a panel talk titled “10 Games To Play Over Text” by two developers of the text-based game “Coffee Break” – John Romero and Sam Hulick. The purpose of the talk was to discuss “10 Games To Play Over Text”, and given that the panel included gameplay specialists and developers, the panelists explained some of the challenges they face when designing text-based games: the limited number of keys on a keyboard, the lack of a mouse cursor to click on things, and the lack of a gamepad to directly interact with things.
Texting during the day is the equivalent of chain smoking. It’s just not healthy. If you’re a fan of texting, you’re probably going to be addicted to it. That’s why some of the best free games for your phone are easy to download and free to play. My favorite game to play over text is Hangman.
Texting is still the most popular method of communication in the US, and games are great to play on your phone because of its small size and great battery life. Here are 10 games that you can play by text message.

The Best Games To Play While Reading Text
via Andrea Piacquadio / Pexels
When you’ve got some spare time or are just bored out of your mind, these text-based games may brighten your day. Texting games are the new cool, therefore you’re missing out if you haven’t tried a fun texting game yet.
The following are the top ten games to play over text:
1. Texting in reverse
Playing Instructions:
This enjoyable game is easy to play but presents a challenge to both players. The name of the game tells it all: you must type backwards, and your opponent must text back exactly what you’ve said. The loser is the one who gives up first.
Example:
?gniog ti si woh,yeH, Stacey
Paula: How are things going for you?
Stacey: ! dooG boj
Paula: How’s it going?

2. A game of trivia
Playing Instructions:
Trivia is a fun way to pass the time while texting. Wait for the player to respond to your trivia question. It’s their chance to ask you a question if they get it correctly. You get to keep asking them questions if they get it incorrect.
You may also keep score to see who gets the most correct answers. And, if you’re looking for some great trivia question ideas, mantelligence.com has them all.
Example:
Sam: What is Spongebob’s pet snail’s name?
Pete: Larry?
Sam: Gary, you’re so near!
Sam: Where does SpongeBob call home?
Pete: Bottom of the Bikini
Sam: Correct! Now it’s your time!

3. Dare or Truth
Playing Instructions:
Surprisingly, truth or dare may be played as a text game. Simply ask the gamer a truth question that they would rather not answer. If they answer it honestly, there is no need for a dare question; but, if they refuse to answer the question, they must do anything you dare them to do.
It’s a little difficult to believe they performed the challenge, so either have them videotape it and submit the video or send a picture/screenshot. Check out this article on mantelligence.com for some fairly serious truth or dare questions to spice up your game with a boyfriend, girlfriend, or any buddy.
Example:
Do you have a crush on anyone? Farah: Truth or Dare: Do you have a crush on anyone?
Truth: Yes, but I’m not going to reveal who!
Truth or Dare: How many people have you kissed in your life?
Farah: Please, dare!!!
Destiny: I challenge you to phone Zack and pretend to get a pizza while I’m on the other line, just to make sure you do it.
Farah: You’re being so unjust…

4. Emoji to English Translation
Playing Instructions:
Emoji translation is a breeze and a lot of fun. Simply substitute emojis or emoticons for your words, and the second player must guess what you’re saying. It’s not tough to obtain the right answer since there’s an emoji for almost every word.
Example:
Ben: 👁️♥️🛌💤
Tiffany: I like sleeping.
Tiffany: 👋👉👃🤢
Ben: Do I stink?
Tiffany: (laughing)

Hangman (number 5)
Playing Instructions:
Yes, text may be used to play hangman. Dude, you’ll have to be willing to give up the “hangman.” Give the second person numerous erroneous guesses at your phrase, sentence, or random word by texting it in all underscores. The amount of erroneous answers you get should be proportional to the length of your sentence. Don’t be unfair and just offer one incorrect guess. You may even include some music lyrics.
Example:
5 incorrect guesses
Keith: E
Beth: e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e
Keith: L
Beth: ell l e ee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Keith: Do you have a cheese odor?
Beth: You only guessed it so fast because you’re very aware of your cheese odor!

6. What Would You Prefer
Playing Instructions:
Another classic game that’s great for messaging (and flirting!) is Would You Rather. It’s more than just a drinking game. All you have to do is compile a list of unique would you rather questions, which you can find on our website here, and ask them to your texting buddy. Give them two equally terrible… or excellent… choices, and they’ll choose one over the other.
Example:
Benny: Would you prefer someone see all of your photos or all of your text conversations on your phone?
Joon: I don’t keep any of my text messages, so go ahead and read them all.
Joon: Would you rather be poor and do something you like, or wealthy and do something you despise?
Benny: I’m already poor and despise my job, therefore I’d much rather be wealthy and despise my work.

7. Unscramble the Words
Playing Instructions:
Word unscramble is similar to reverse text, but it is more difficult. One of the players writes a word or phrase that is totally jumbled and difficult to understand. To figure out the other’s statements, you must unscramble the words. Perhaps you could turn this into a narrative builder (although crazier)!
Example:
Travis: rty ot giufre uot hwat I ma yigasnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Ciara: try to understand what I’m saying.
Ciara: taht aws vrey hrad ot raed, taht aws vrey hrad ot raed, taht aw
Travis: That was very difficult to read – and yours was much too simple.

8. Puzzles
Playing Instructions:
Who doesn’t like a good riddle? Even a celebrity admires them. Send puzzles to whomever you’re messaging in turn, and give them many chances to figure it out. Keep track of how many of your answers are accurate to decide the winner.
Example:
Ameer: Is there anything that tastes better than it smells?
cooked eggs, Adam?
Yes, Ameer, but it isn’t the right response.
Adam: I’m done…
Ameer: You have a tongue!
Adam: How would you know what the taste of my tongue is?

9. Most Probable To
Playing Instructions:
Most likely to questions are usually more fun with a group of friends since you can predict who is most likely to do what. This fun texting game (that can also be played as a party game) is simple: someone asks who’s most likely to do something, and everyone in the group chat sends their vote for who they believe is most likely to do it.
The questions may be about anything, but go over to mantelligence.com for the finest collection of most likely to questions. They have a lot to pick from.
Example:
Who do you think is more likely to pick their nose in public? Anna:
Jeff: Louis
Noah: Louis
Penny: Louis
Savannah: Jeff
Jeff: Savannah! What? Why?
Louis: Louis

10. I’ve never done anything before.
Playing Instructions:
Never have I ever is another another entertaining text-based game. One person poses a never have I ever question to the group, and everyone replies with either I have never (if they haven’t done it) or I have (if they have done it). For the most amusing never have I ever questions you’ve ever heard, go to our page here.
Example:
Gloria: I’ve never gone skinny dipping before.
Ronaldo: I’ve got it.
Becky: I’ve never done anything like that before.

Jasmin: I’ve (nearly) finished.

Most Commonly Asked Questions
through Cottonbro / Pexels
Don’t worry if you’re not sure how these SMS games operate; we’ve answered some of the most commonly asked questions to clear up any misunderstanding you may have regarding text-based games.
How do you choose a winner in a texting game?
Some games, on the other hand, have no winner. It’s all in good humor.
Other games, on the other hand, allow you to keep track of how many you and your texting partner get correct in order to decide the winner.
When it comes to texting games, how long should they last?
Who claimed a limit was necessary? Play for as long as you and the other person are having a good time. If it becomes tedious, go to a new game or stop playing entirely.
Is it true that texting games are only for two people?
Obviously not. Why do you believe group messaging exists? Gather a bunch of pals and start playing. It may be a puzzle, a word game, or a board game that has been converted into a texting game. With buddies, any man will love it!

Are you attempting to decide which games to play initially over text? These games are all fun, but which ones are ideal for you and your texting friends or a potential flirt? Don’t be concerned. We’ll assist you in determining which players are the greatest to play with, regardless of who you’re playing with.
Here’s how to choose the finest text-based games:
1. Is it a Texting Buddy or Something More?
through Cottonbro / Pexels
Consider the individual with whom you’re playing. Sometimes the most flirtatious approach to kickstart a relationship is to play texting games. When you don’t know someone very well, playing a text-based game with them may help you connect in a pleasant and relaxed manner. Make sure you don’t play any games that are too personal.
If you’re playing with someone you’ve known for a long time, though, you can definitely get away with being nosy and in your face.
2. Play Difficult Games With Competent Players

We’ve all met those individuals in our lives who can’t take losing. Perhaps you are one of them. To keep gamers like this engaged in the game, you’ll need a genuine challenge. Texting games like trivia and reverse text may be very difficult. However, if you want to make it more difficult, don’t choose a single word with reverse writing!
3. Easy-to-learn games for easy-to-learn times

Even though you wish you could play these games whenever you want, life constantly comes in the way. (The rhyming was unintentional.) Choose basic games that you can finish quickly if you need to get a short game in before the doctor calls your name or the instructor sees that you’re texting.
