In November of 1993, a group of developers and publishers came together to form a gaming company small enough to be anonymous, but large enough to have a significant impact. They called themselves Epic MegaGames (and it can be written without the “i” in the middle), and over the next three years they released a number of critically acclaimed games—some well-known, others forgotten. Now, more than 20 years later, one of those games has been revisited in the form of a remaster for modern consoles, but it has undergone a significant change.
Legendary game developer, Nightdive Studios’ revival of the phenomenally popular first-person shooter, PowerSlave, is set to release in 2019. Nightdive has been extremely secretive, but the recent release of PowerSlave: The Devil’s Castle on Steam hints that the company is working on a full remaster of the game. The remaster will include improved visuals, new environments, a brand new soundtrack, and more.
PowerSlave was the sequel to System Shock 2, a beloved FPS from the mid 90’s. It established a new franchise that focused on immersive sims, driven by storytelling and character interaction. However, when Nightdive Studios took over the franchise, some of the original developers left and the project fell apart. Now, nearly 20 years later, a remaster of the original game by Nightdive Studios is getting a release on the modern day Unreal Engine 4. Nightdive Studios is asking fans for feedback so the game can be released in a way that retains the legacy of the original, while also providing the features that modern gamers demand.

PowerSlave Exhumed is an HD remake of Lobotomy Software’s iconic first-person shooter set in the ancient Egyptian city of Karnak, which is under assault by extraterrestrial insect-like aliens known as the Kilmaat, as confirmed by a shop listing and an unlisted trailer courtesy of GOG.
The game will be upgraded with numerous improvements, including new widescreen/HD resolutions, modern controller compatibility, SMAA antialiasing, and anistrophic texture filtering, according to GOG’s description. Players may also anticipate achievements, Vulkan/Direct X 11 graphics API compatibility, and smooth object interpolation for high refresh rate displays in PowerSlave Exhumed.
The original PowerSlave was published under three distinct names in the United States, Europe, and Japan (PowerSlave, Exhumed, and Seireki 1999: Pharaoh no Fukkatsu), and got a PlayStation version in 1997 that differed significantly from its Sega Saturn equivalent. In PowerSlave Exhumed, both of these versions have been merged “to offer the best of both worlds.”

It’s an age-old story: A classic PC game that’s been ported to modern platforms, only to be greeted by a wave of mixed analysis, if any at all. Why didn’t you mention the negative analysis?! Yes, it’s true, the game went through a ton of changes of its own over the years, but the changes it did receive were generally well-received. But something tells me that the people who dislike PowerSlave Exhumed are going to be pretty vocal about their opinions.
