Radeons RX 6000 series (6XX) are often used for YouTube videos, such as streaming. AMD Radeon Adrenalin drivers 16.12.2 may reduce power consumption during playback, which may result in a higher power bill.
For a while now, there has been a little debate about AMD’s Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards consuming too much power when watching YouTube videos on their Desktop. I’ve been running the new Adrenalin drivers on a Gigabyte Radeon RX 580 AXR8 Gaming 8G for a few days now, and while I haven’t been able to confirm this myself, another user mentioned the issue to me after I posted some tests on Reddit. This user was running the latest Adrenalin drivers and the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 on Windows 10. Since I, myself, haven’t upgraded to Windows 10 yet, I was unsure if this was an Nvidia driver issue or AMD driver.
YouTube usage can be very demanding on a system, especially when the content is high-definition videos with large file sizes. But what if the content is an animated video? While most of the time YouTube’s playback performance is pretty smooth, some Radeon graphics cards can see performance degradation when playing YouTube content. That’s because the playback is heavily power-demanding on these graphics cards.. Read more about amd 6000 series and let us know what you think.

According to fresh benchmarks provided by ComputerBase, AMD’s newest driver package seems to help certain Radeon RX 6000 Series devices use less power while playing back specific kinds of YouTube video. When playing 4K 60 FPS content, the Radeon RX 6700 XT seems to benefit from power reductions of 30 to 18 watts, whilst the Radeon RX 6900 XT should experience reductions of 42 to 30 watts. However, none of these enhancements seem to apply when HDR is activated.
Furthermore, when Radeon RX 6000 Series graphics cards are utilized to drive a multi-monitor configuration in 4K resolution, AMD’s newest Radeon drivers do not seem to decrease power usage. AMD customers have expressed their worries regarding this, however it seems that the Radeon RX 6600 XT is the only RDNA 2 GPU that consumes less than 33 watts when used to power these types of systems.
The introduction of AMD’s newest RDNA 2 graphics card, the Radeon RX 6600 XT, inspired the testing. Initially, it was assumed that these GPUs were just less power hungry than their brothers, but it turns out that the differences are mainly due to AMD’s newest driver package’s enhancements.
This week, AMD released the Radeon RX 6600 XT graphics card. It has 32 CPUs, 8 GB of GDDR6 memory on a 128-bit memory interface, a 2,359/2,589 MHz game/boost clock, and 32 MB of Infinity Cache. 160 watts is the TBP.

The Radeon RX 6800 XT with Adrenalin 21.8.1 and two UHD displays at 60 Hz consumes a whopping 41 watts, but with the November 2020 launch driver, it consumes just 2 watts. There were no enhancements with the Radeon RX 6700 XT, Radeon RX 6800, or Radeon RX 6900 XT.
