The latest installment of the Call of Duty series, released back in November for Playstation 4 and Xbox One. The idea behind Vanguard is that it takes place at a time when America was no longer an independent country.

Call of Duty Vanguard is the most recent installment in the Call of Duty series. For this installment, we return to World War II, presumably for the last time.
I’m going to be honest and say that the narrative mode isn’t excellent. You are part of a team on a clandestine mission to steal Nazi intelligence when you are apprehended. After then, you’ll play a succession of different battles from various times in World War 2’s history. All of the cliché fights are here, as if you were performing the greatest hits of your favorite band! Normandy?? You can bet your bottom dollar that you’ll be there straight immediately! Stalingrad? NATURALLY! It was just…blah. The worst aspect is that they are all flashbacks, so the conflicts have no weight since you KNOW the characters will overcome them. When Andy enters into the room, your colleagues are as dead as a Buzz Lightyear action figure.
The multiplayer mode has 20 levels and all of the bells and whistles you’ve come to expect from a game like this. As you go through the stages, you’ll be able to pick from a variety of skills to aid you in combat. As you go through the game, you’ll be able to earn new attachments for your weapon, which you may then alter. Aside from the usual Domination, Kill Confirmed, and Hardpoint modes, there are a few new ones this time around. This time, they included a new mode called Patrol, which I felt was a welcome change of pace. Think Hardpoint, except the region you’re trying to capture moves across the map all the time. Thankfully, this means that campers will not be able to take their seats and mow down everybody who comes in.
I believe that cross-play will be well received by all players. This almost eliminates the need to wait in line for any matches. However, I’d want to add a personal comment since I noticed flaws with it after approximately 20 minutes of playtime. When it comes to multiplayer, I don’t consider myself a god, but I’m definitely no slacker. But it struck me as odd because in one of my battles, I unloaded approximately 20 headshots on a man and he didn’t die, but when I dived behind a high wall, he shot me ONCE, through the wall in my stomach, and I died instantly. If it doesn’t immediately reveal the problem, I observed that he was a PC gamer and was able to deduce that he was most likely cheating. I witnessed more of these antics until I switched off cross-play, which luckily helped.
Zombies mode is, of course, back. To be honest, I’ve never been a fan, so I don’t have much to say about it. The goal is to outlast waves of zombies for an extended amount of time.
Here’s the issue I’m having with Vanguard. Please bear with me for a while since I realize this is going to seem a little stupid. The issue I have is that I don’t feel like the game accomplished anything to further the plot. You could tell me this game was DLC for the previous game, Black Ops Cold War, based on the aesthetics and gameplay, and I’d believe you 100 percent! Furthermore, the fact that we are returning to World War 2 AGAIN indicates to me that the devs’ go-to thought tank for ideas is rapidly drying up.
Everything about it, from the narrative to the multiplayer, appears to revolve on the fact that it takes place during World War 2. That’s something we’ve seen and done far too many times to count. The array of characters is forgettable, and despite the tale having a few times when it seemed like something spectacular was about to happen, it never happened. The tale falls flat on its face, and the multiplayer failed to entice me. Perhaps next time… I’ll give Vanguard the benefit of the doubt and say that the visuals and controls are excellent, but that is to be expected from a AAA title at this time.
Overall, Call of Duty Vanguard was uninspired, and although I usually put in at least 100 hours into Call of Duty games between story mode and multiplayer, I can’t wait to erase it from my hard drive as soon as possible.
