LG’s flagship phone for the year 2021 is finally here, and it’s a very interesting phone due to its unusual size – or in other words, the iconic “phablet” body has been replaced by a rather small and light one. LG CEO Jong-seok Park has confirmed that the handset will be called “Gram 17”, and that the phone will run Android 9 Pie, which is said to be inspired by Pie in iOS 11.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen a phone from LG, and the company has just released the successor to the LG G5, which is the LG G6. The LG G7 is a follow-up to the LG G6, and it looks like the company has tried to keep as many of the features that made the G6 popular as possible. The phone has a pretty standard design, with a metal frame, glass back, and an 18:9 aspect ratio. The only real surprise is the presence of a notch, which is a trend that LG has recently started embracing.
You have probably seen LG’s “Gram” line of smartphones before. The models range from entry-level smartphones with small screens to large-screen flagships with lots of features like foldable phones. This year, LG launched its newest smartphone in the “Gram” series. The device has a big 18:9 display with a size of 6.2-inch. It is the first smartphone with this screen size, and it is bigger than the Galaxy S9+ and S9. It has a starting price of $350 and comes in black, blue, red, and silver colors.
TECH REVIEW – When a buddy says they want a 17-inch widescreen laptop, one of our most frequent replies is “no, I really don’t.” The majority of these gadgets are large, bulky, and heavy.
The LG Gram 17, on the other hand, turns that notion on its head. It’s none of the above. And its big screen is unquestionably superior for playing games, viewing movies, and perusing those massive, soul-draining spreadsheets in many respects.
The Gram 17 is less than half the weight of typical 15-inch laptops. It’s even lighter than some 13-inch models. Despite this, it still packs a punch and has a long battery life.
That seems like some kind of enchantment. The only major flaw is that it lacks a true performance processor — the type you need for serious video editing – and the screen is excessively reflective.
However, like the original LG Gram 17, the LG Gram 17 2020 seems to be a really portable widescreen laptop.
So, what’s new?
- Hinge redesigned
- New CPU
- Larger battery capacity
One of the most common concerns about the laptop was that it had an out-of-date CPU. LG has addressed this issue. The hinge has also been modified, with the removal of a large barrel for a neater appearance. The battery life has also improved, lasting many hours longer than the previous generation.
Design
- Weight: 1.35 kg / Dimensions: 80.6 x 262.6 x 17.4 mm
- Magnesium shell, dark silver
- The LG Gram 17 is a series that has been around for a while. It’s been around in the UK since 2019, yet many of you are probably unaware of it.
It’s a small, light, and minimalist-looking laptop that’s unlike any other 17-inch laptop on the market today. For example, Dell’s Inspiron 17 has an optical drive and weights almost 3kg, evoking memories of our first “business laptop” – the stuff of back-pain nightmares for many of us.
Back discomfort is not the fault of the LG Gram 17. It weights 1.3kg, which is around 500g less than the 15-inch MacBook Pro and is typical for a thin 13- or 14-inch model, not a 17-inch.
How did LG accomplish this? Magnesium and innovative design. But magnesium is the most important mineral. Magnesium alloys are utilized in nearly all ultra-light computers because they are lighter than aluminum alloys, such as those used in Apple’s MacBooks.
Apple is a technological conservative, therefore it does not utilize aluminum. The LG Gram 17’s case isn’t as attractive as a MacBook Pro’s case. You won’t get the same amazing feel to the touch, nor the unrivaled density that makes you feel like you could cut down a tree with a MacBook (don’t try this at home).
The LG Gram 17 may seem ordinary to some. LG has also informed us that there will be some flex, which is typical with lightweight magnesium designs. Nonetheless, this laptop is impressive. The screen has a little flex, and pressing firmly on the center of the keyboard will cause it to bow slightly. The LG Gram 17 is still surprisingly rigid, considering its specs.
This is something we’ve seen with prior Gram laptops. They are harder than they seem on the surface. LG attempts to demonstrate this by subjecting the impoverished to a series of military-style toughness tests. High and low temperatures, simulated dust storms, and a saltwater explosion are among the challenges, but the one that matters the most is shock. The LG Gram 17 survived 26 falls from a height of 1.2 meters. We assume this implies it was killed on the 27th try, but that’s not a terrible result.
Life of the battery
- Cell with a capacity of 80Wh
- Charger with a cylindrical shape
- Battery life of up to 18.5 hours
The LG Gram 17 is an unexpected road warrior, but it’s the battery life, not the crash protection, that brings it all together. According to LG, the battery can last up to 18.5 hours. However, as is so common these days, these statistics are predicated on a situation in which the laptop is idle half of the time.
The Gram 17 lasts slightly under 13 hours in our testing, which included watching a YouTube video at medium brightness until the screen checks. That’s much more than the industry norm of eight hours for a full workday.
In less than eight hours, you’ll be able to accomplish a bit more than just basic surfing and document authoring.
The Gram series has always been known for its long battery life. However, there’s no actual magic here: LG employs considerably bigger batteries than the majority of rivals. This one features an 80 Wh cell, demonstrating that a tiny battery doesn’t always imply bad endurance.
Screen
- 17-inch IPS LCD with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels
- Plastic with a lustrous sheen
- Screen that is not touchable
One flaw stops this laptop from becoming the ideal widescreen travel laptop. The LG Gram 17’s screen is very reflective, much more so than other laptops with glossy glass screens.
It has a plastic surface with no coating to reduce glare at the edges. You may see more than what’s on your screen if you place the Gram 17 in front of a bright window.
Why is plastic used? Of course, it aids in weight reduction and also adds to toughness, since plastic does not shatter like glass.
The real question is why LG chose a glossy coating over a matte one. The simplest and most probable answer is what it seems to be. A glossy screen has a refined appeal, and the LG Gram 17 is, after all, a lifestyle laptop.
The screen quality of the laptop is outstanding in every other areas. It’s extremely bright, has a decent color depth, and has a high contrast for an LCD screen.
In addition, the screen resolution is very excellent. Most 17-inch laptops have a 1080p display, however this one has a resolution of 2560 x 1600. The picture seems crisper and cleaner, which is useful for apps that display a lot of data. Even in the smaller screen versions, it falls short of the 4K standard offered by Dell in its XPS line.
The gram 17’s display form size seems to be intended for apps rather than “content” like movies and games, despite the great color and strong contrast. It’s a 16:10 screen, which is larger than the standard 16:9. This improves the appearance of the canvas for your applications, but it leaves black bars while viewing movies.
This is just a remark, not a critique. This kind of display would be ideal for applications like the Ableton music sequencer, which may be difficult to use on a laptop with a tiny screen.
The LG Gram 17’s screen, like those on previous Gram laptops, only folds down into the traditional post, not flat, and it’s not a touchscreen. There’s also no stylus. It’s more of a laptop than a creative tool, though Microsoft is promoting the latter in its Surface lines if that’s what you’re looking for.
Connections
- USB-C Thunderbolt 3 40 Gbit/s
- 3 USB-A 3.1 ports
- 1x HDMI
LG, on the other hand, believes that a 17-inch laptop user would desire and need. On the sides, for example, there are more than simply USB-C connections.
Three full-size USB connections, an HDMI connector, and a microSD card slot are included. Most photographers would prefer a regular SD card slot, but these days, we’re fortunate to obtain a memory card reader at all.
Thunderbolt 3 compatibility implies USB-C can connect to ultra-high-bandwidth devices like 4K displays with faster refresh rates.
A fingerprint scanner is also included in the LG Gram 17’s power button. However, since the camera does not support Windows Hello, you will be unable to use your face to unlock the laptop.
With a 720p sensor, its camera is important, and when used inside, its picture appears like an oil painting of inadequate technology attempting to cope with image noise.
Trackpad and keyboard
- Backlighting on the keyboard has two levels.
- Fingerprint scanner on the NUM pad
- Touchpad made of textured glass with built-in buttons
The LG Gram 17’s webcam, we believe, would be better suited in today’s Zoom-obsessed world. The other fundamentals, on the other hand, are outstanding and much better than you would anticipate.
While the keyboard seems to be a thin 14-inch laptop with a number pad glued to the side, it has a more powerful keypress than others. Their motion is smooth and not clicky, yet each touch is accompanied by a strong feedback impact.
The shell vibrates as you tap away, something you wouldn’t notice on a laptop built of stronger materials, but it’s a fair exchange for the Gram 17’s light weight.
To make space for the numeric keypad, the normal typing keys are somewhat displaced to the left, although we didn’t find this to be especially bothersome while typing. The LG Gram 17’s cursor stops as you write, so it doesn’t matter whether your palm contacts the pad.
LG also uses this deceptively smart strategy to sidestep the most frequent criticism about laptops with NUM pads. The touchpad is always set to the neutral position. It is not moved to the left, as is the case with almost all other computers with similar keyboard layout. What’s the end result? It feels great, even without the awkward arm-twisting you should have done.
In almost every other way, the pad is a class act. It features a glass surface that allows for very smooth finger sliding. It does, however, flex more at the corners than similar-priced computers. However, this is only apparent if you search for it. And part of our duty in this evaluation is to do just that.
Performance
- Processor Intel Core i7-1065G7
- RAM: 16 GB
- SSD (512 GB)
The LG Gram 17 doesn’t have the same CPU as some other large-screen laptops. It is, in fact, Intel. Yes, the chipset is from the Core series. Its Intel Core i7-1065G7 CPU, on the other hand, is intended for low power consumption and minimal heat production rather than pro-grade performance.
Apple’s MacBook Pro 16, for example, has an H-series processor. And that’s why it’s an actual “Pro” laptop, ideal for video editors, graphics professionals, and anyone else who needs a workstation rather than just a laptop. However, a Core i7 MacBook Pro 16 costs much more and weighs much more.
You probably don’t need that sort of power if you don’t know whether you need. The LG Gram 17 runs Windows 10 and common apps well. Its 512GB SSD also has lightning-fast read speeds (up to 3369MB/s) and writes (up to 1930MB/s).
The Core i7 CPU includes one of Intel’s Iris Plus GPUs, which is superior than the UHD 620 graphics chipset on the previous Gram 17, enabling you to play Skyrim in 1080p with medium graphics settings.
At 1280 x 800 resolution and low graphics, the newer and better-looking Witcher 3 is hardly playable (minimum requirements needed). In the desert, frame rates range from 20 to 26 frames per second, whereas in towns, frame rates range from 15 to 22 frames per second.
That’s not terrible for a laptop intended for light work, but the LG Gram 17 needs an Nvidia MX350 graphics card. This is a low-end graphics card designed for thin and light laptops like this one. This would enable you to play more difficult games. Although Intel claims that the graphics chipset integrated into this Core i7 can replace an entry-level graphics card, it just isn’t as good.
Since the previous edition, LG claims to have enhanced the Gram 17’s cooling mechanism by increasing the fan’s size. This is significant since the temperature affects how long a laptop like this can operate in Turbo mode. The fan, on the other hand, does not need much to start blowing. Downloading anything while surfing seems to work, and we could hear it spinning nearly constantly while testing – but it’s never loud.
Finally, some thoughts
The LG Gram 17 is a completely self-contained device. It’s the only 17-inch laptop intended for those who want a big-screen notebook instead of a large, powerful workstation.
Some may argue, “Who wants that?” However, the Gram 17 is perfect for anybody who spends most of their time in front of a monitor and considers moving to a laptop screen to be a major downgrade. This laptop is lightweight, with a battery that can last all day and more, and a keyboard and trackpad that are both functional.
Are there any disadvantages? The screen is a little too reflective, and a low-end graphics card might help during non-peak hours. But at this price, I can’t have everything.
LG stands apart from the competition without depending on gimmicks or technologies that only a few people would enjoy. As far as large computers go, this one is fully equipped.

The Gram 17 is not only light, but also pleasant to the touch and appealing to the eye. A nice keyboard and touchpad compliment the large screen. While the high price may deter those seeking for a more affordable alternative, it provides more than enough performance for daily office activities – particularly in a market flooded with giant-screen laptops in the same category.
