With the rise of Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder, and Tyson Fury, heavyweight boxing has had a resurgence of sorts over the last half-decade. Outside of the silliness and theatrics of the YouTube/Influencer exhibition fights, pugilism’s money division has resurfaced after years of the Klitschko Brothers boring fans to tears.
Last night’s “Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder III” brought the trilogy to a close with a rematch between the two fighters from February 2020, with Fury knocking out Wilder in the 11th round instead of the 7th. The excuses are pouring, and they’re just as depressing as the outcome.
Wilder blamed his hilariously terrible ring attire (which made him seem like a Power Rangers villain) for his knockout in 2020, claiming that the extra weight (which was reportedly 40+ pounds) tired him out as he entered the ring. Instead of a record-breaking 11th consecutive defense of the WBC heavyweight world championship, he’d have to settle for a tie with Mohammad Ali.
The reasons didn’t take a few days to come out this time, and Wilder’s nasty personality was on full show following the official call in the ring. In all honesty, Fury’s comeback to knock out Wilder after being knocked down twice in the fight was incredible, and it’s being hailed as one of the best heavyweight fights in history by experts and fans alike. They didn’t exchange post-fight pleasantries, with Fury firing the opening fire, claiming Wilder “didn’t want to show any sportsmanship or respect.”
“I simply replied, ‘Well done,’ and he responded, ‘I don’t want to show any sportsmanship or respect,’” Fury recalled when asked what they said before the interview began. ‘No problem,’ I replied. I was taken aback. You’re a bitter loser. Idiot.”
Fury went on to say that the bout was “worthy of any trilogy in the history of the sport” and that Wilder was a great fighter. But don’t underestimate the “Gypsy King’s” strength and skills. Before scooping away his squad and wife, Paris, Fury chose to send the fans home happy with his own unique version of “Walking in Memphis.”

Fury decided to hit the streets of Las Vegas once the singing and showboating in the ring was over (as the fight took place at the T-Mobile Arena). Fury chose to go naked dancing on stage in front of hundreds of fans in the Hakkasan nightclub, which is just adjacent to the MGM Grand Arena, the site of the second fight with Wilder in the trilogy. If the photographic evidence is to be believed, he was drinking a Bud Light.
With his fight camp in tow, Fury pulled out his Freddie Mercury impersonation and sang out the Queen classic “We Are the Champions,” not content with just one song for the evening. Fury’s wife was there, perhaps humiliated or oblivious to the situation.
According to his trainer, Malik Scott, Wilder has subsequently claimed that he fractured his hand during the fight. Wilder accused Fury of cheating in the knockout fight in 2020 by utilizing loaded gloves and “horsehair” padding to get an edge, as well as making other amusing claims like tainted water influencing his prior performance. Nothing has been verified, but that is no need to be disheartened. You were caught; improve, but for now, go to the back of the line. Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury is the fight that fight fans have been waiting for.
