Earlier today, Microsoft unveiled their next Halo game: Halo Infinite. The company announced a lot of things about the game, but one of them was that players won’t be able to select the option to have their character assassinate enemies in the campaign. This was probably a bit controversial, considering how prominent assassinations are in the Halo series and how they’ve been an important part of the Halo lore and fan experience for years.

Microsoft’s upcoming Halo Infinite won’t feature assassinations, at least temporarily. Halo Infinite is an Xbox One game being developed by 343 Industries, the same studio behind the Halo series. It is scheduled for release later this year, but Halo Infinite has been in development for some time now.

Following the lackluster reception to Halo Infinite’s recent reveal, 343 Industries has since confirmed that the upcoming sequel will not feature assassinations, a feature that caused players to turn the feature off. One of the many reasons Halo Infinite was considered to be a failure by fans was due to the lack of any new features, with 343 stating that the game will be no different from any of the past titles in the series. The studio acknowledged that people are weary of the series without new content, saying that “if the player-base is tired of Halo, then we’re not going to fix it by adding more to Halo.”

Assassination is a Halo gaming feature that enables players to enter a third-person perspective in multiplayer matches and watch their character meticulously murder an opponent with an Energy Sword or other popular close-combat weapon. It was first included in 2010’s Halo: Reach. Players may use the Assassination function by holding the melee button behind their target and gloating in a method that is basically a quick death.

Unfortunately for the more egotistical Halo gamers, Halo Infinite creator 343 Industries has announced that the Assassination function will not be accessible at launch. Due to the feature’s positive response from Halo gamers, 343 Industries has decided to move its emphasis away from it, according to senior mission designer Tom French. Nobody seems to worry about them anymore, despite the fact that they may put players at a disadvantage in battle.

French said, “[Assassinations] are not in the works.” “Assassinations are something we truly like… However, at a lot of levels, people just turn them off since it has a gaming disadvantage.”

It’s unclear whether Assassinations will ever return to Halo Infinite, as French went on to add that the team was taking a “step back” and that the feature will only be revived when it “truly simply feels important such that they’re always an accessible option.”

Halo Infinite will be released this Christmas season on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows 10 PCs. It will include a free-to-play multiplayer component.

During a webcast at the end of July, 343 Industries, the developer of Halo Infinite, revealed that assassinations would not be possible in the sci-fi shooter. However, after the latest test flight, interest in the previously missing franchise tradition has resurfaced on the internet.
