If you haven’t heard, Crytek, the developer behind Crysis and Crysis 2, has announced that both of its major-title titles will be remastered re-releases in the form of “Crysis 2: Maximum Edition” (Crysis 2 remastered) and “Crysis 3: Crysis Wars” (Crysis 3 remastered). The original Crysis games have been pretty divisive, with both the original game and its sequel receiving a lot of praise from press and consumers alike.

Crysis 2 and Crysis 3 are the latest and greatest in the “Crysis” franchise. They offer stunning visuals and feature some new, interesting gameplay elements. Crysis 3 also has a new multiplayer feature called “Hunter Mode” that players will be able to test out if they purchase the “Crysis 3” game. —–

Crysis 2 and Crysis 3 Remastered will feature Ray Tracing (RT) exclusively on PC, according to a post on the game’s Steam forums. The CryENGINE3 (the game’s engine) will support RT and use it for the game’s ray-tracing lighting effects. The post also states that “Crysis 2 will have RT as default, with the option to turn it off for the performance mode” .

Yesterday, Crytek released a video showing how its Crysis remasters appear on the Xbox Series X. While they look fantastic on Microsoft’s next-gen platform, Crysis aficionados will need to choose for the PC versions if they want to experience them at their finest.

Neither Crysis 2 nor Crysis 3 Remastered will benefit from the ray-tracing improvements that Crytek has made for the PC versions of the games, as revealed in Digital Foundry’s exclusive look at the games. Ray tracing will not be featured in the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, or Nintendo Switch versions because the developer decided it would be preferable to spend its effort on general improvements rather than figuring out how to fit in a demanding, possibly performance-crushing feature.

In its exclusive peek, Eurogamer stated, “Crytek has taken away the performance, fidelity, and ray tracing choices from the console versions and is focusing on achieving the perfect balance between realism and performance in one single setting.”

“On the other hand, it’s business as usual on PC, where we can expect to see ray traced reflections and the typical degrees of customisation.”

Crytek has yet to announce a release date for Crysis Remastered Trilogy, but it will be released this autumn for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, with improved support for Sony and Microsoft’s next-generation platforms. The collection does not seem to contain a remastered version of Sergeant Michael “Psycho” Sykes’ solo Crysis expansion, Crysis Warhead, from 2008.

With the release of Crysis 2 and Crysis 3 Remastered, the Crysis Remastered Trilogy will be complete, and John Linneman visited Crytek’s Frankfurt headquarters to speak with the developers about their approach to the final two games in the series, as well as how the studio has taken feedback from the first Crysis Remastered. Oh, and a chance to witness the first gameplay video of Crysis 2 Remastered on the PlayStation 5? Let’s get started.
