The first thing I will say about Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny is that it is definitely different, in a good way. It is different from previous entries in the series in just about every way possible. That’s a good thing, because I can’t speak highly enough of this game.

Review – Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny – Despite the ludicrous number 6, Disgaea 6 is an excellent entry in the series. It takes the best of the early games and adds a lot of new content, along with some new battles and characters, while still being a great game in its own right. This is the flagship entry in the series, and it shows. From the very beginning,  Disgaea 6  impresses with its gorgeous visuals, and the gameplay is as fun and addictive as ever. The game takes place in a fantasy world that looks great, and the core gameplay is as fast-paced as ever.  Disgaea 6  is a great way to spend about

The Disgaea series is one of many tactical role-playing games that first appeared on the PSP, and is renowned for its outlandish humor and quirky characters. Although the series started out as a parody of Japanese role playing games, it began to evolve into its own unique take on the genre.

Don’t fix what isn’t broken. Too few games understand this, while others confuse working for layoffs with simply accepting players. Disgaea is one of those franchises that falls right in the middle. From Disgaea 1 to Disgaea 5, Nippon Ichi proved from the beginning that they knew what they wanted to do. And they will continue to do so as long as they can. Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny is a perfect example of this mantra.

This is the sixth installment in the long-running Final Fantasy Tactics series on steroids, and with the exception of the new 3D graphics, it’s pretty much the same game as the first installment. Some people think this is a bad thing. Personally, I like that the franchise stays true to what made it popular in the first place. It’s something other series can learn from.

I’ve always described Disgaea as Final Fantasy Tactics on steroids. And that is the simplest and best way to describe exactly what a franchise is. On the one hand, you do the standard SRPG stuff. Recruit characters, equip them with the standard set of five slots, and determine their class development. Then fight on square, tile-based maps in turn-based team battles. There are things like combo attacks, team attacks, throws, and many other techniques to learn. Or just a good slap in the face with something sharp. The best thing about Disgaea is that it scales very well, depending on how much the player wants to work with the system. If you don’t want to hire a mechanic, you don’t have to. Ten others may be elected in their place.

Most JRPGs have a deep and interesting protagonist who drives the story. Disgaea 6 has Zed.

Steroids come into play with numbers. You see, most role-playing games try to be reasonable. Progress is a good thing, but it must be carefully weighed. The numbering system should be simple and understandable for everyone. Start small and work your way up. Disgaea looked at him and said no. The numbers are probably the most important feature. The maximum number of levels is 99,999,999 (compared to 9,999 in previous games). The limits on stats, damage, and other parameters are equally ridiculous. Not only because they are so high, but also because players can actually get in. Imagine a level 99,999,999 Pokémon that does a quadrillion damage with Tackle. Normal people would wonder why. Disgaea says because.

Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny essentially follows this formula. There are a few differences, both small and somewhat larger. The game features several new classes and returning classics, changes to the weapon system, character changes for the monster classes, and a number of tweaks under the hood. Everything small and standard for the RPG franchise changes between games. As for the more serious changes and additions, there are about four. A new super reincarnation system, a significant increase in the number of covers, new game mechanics and new 3D graphics. But honestly, none of this changes the game, it’s just different or new.

Don’t worry, the best features of Disgaea are still there. No judgement.

The super reincarnation system is pretty easy to explain. The previous system of reincarnation was essentially a form of vertical progression. It takes your character as is, puts him back to level 1, but lets him keep certain stats and skill development. Super Reincarnation is essentially the same, with some changes. There is a new currency called Karma that you unlock by performing various character-related actions. After Super Reincarnation, you can use karma to increase your stats that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to get. It actually takes the Chara World from other games and combines it with an existing system. Personally, I like this kind of rationalization. It makes sense, it simplifies things, and without reducing the complexity of the package. Big changes.

Not so much now. The new quantitative limits themselves are good, but what has been done to introduce them is not very good. I say sort of, because ultimately, that’s not the biggest problem. But it can become so if the problem gets out of hand. Basically, all slopes and numbers have been raised to match the new caps. Now you go up a level very fast by flying through the levels. Basic characters start at level 1 and have ridiculous stats. Even do-it-yourself appliances have high scores. At first, it’s hard to tell what’s good and what’s not because everything is so big. While this fits well with the Disgaea idea that big numbers are always better, I like a good number curve. And Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny is very confusing.

Disgaea 6- Defiance of Destiny Review

Numbers, numbers, numbers everywhere.

But if I don’t want to increase that number, I’m more bothered by the graphical changes. I was excited at first. I’m not a 2D purist, and it is 2021 after all. But after playing with it, I wasn’t convinced. It’s not just that Disgaea has lost its signature style, although that’s also a factor. It’s mainly to show how useless 3D graphics are for a strategy based on tiles that don’t interact with the environment. It’s just 3D for the sake of 3D, even if it could be more. Or not, because this is not the game Disgaea wants to be. All at the expense of Disgaea’s usual gorgeous 2D style. The franchise has done so much in 2D that 3D seems like a step backwards. Not to mention the very real performance problems due to engine issues for 3D rendering.

Finally, there are the meh changes. The game has added two important features that make the game easier to play. There is a new x32 speed mode for when you just want to shred without fighting. There is also a new Autobattle mode. It’s very similar to the artificial intelligence system of Bioware’s classic games. You can customize your character’s AI, determine what skills they should use in certain situations, and then unleash them on the maps. It’s a great way to pull characters to get those ridiculous numbers if you have nothing else to do at the moment. I probably won’t use it now, but maybe in the future. I’m sure it will be a boon to some players, while others will never touch it. It’s still good that it’s there for those who want it.

Disgaea 6- Defiance of Destiny Review 2021

There’s nothing in 3D that hasn’t already been done in 2D, except that it’s much better.

Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny is a Disgaea game, but with 3D graphics. This is indeed the best summary of the game we can find. Those who love the franchise have already bought it, and those who don’t probably won’t be blown away by the new 3D graphics. It’s one of those games that exists only for the fans, which I think is great; I love games that exist unabashedly to please their fans. It’s the best game to try and be what the franchise exists for, and even when it potentially goes wrong, it’s hard to call it a disaster. You can change the numbers at any time and optimize performance. The game that was lazy to begin with cannot be recovered. And unlike Zed, the game’s zombie protagonist, there’s nothing suspicious about Disgaea 6.

I don’t know if the wonderful new 3D models and environments are worth the performance issues or loss of Disgaea’s beautiful traditional 2D style. It’s the same Disgaea you love or hate, but with relatively minor changes.
The voice acting is good, the sound effects are good, and the music is catchy and doesn’t get boring. It’s still a Disgaea game, no matter how many D’s it has. So while I think progressive grinding is infinitely fun, others will probably disagree.
Final decision: 8.0
