I have serious issues with depression and anxiety caused by abuse in my childhood. Something physical, but a huge amount of neglect and self-loathing and a bunch of other crap. I have a hard time starting something new and investing in it. I’m sure there’s a psychological reason, but whatever. I had the same problem with the government of Malawi. Technically, I started the game last year, but the opening menus exhaust me and I didn’t put any effort into it. She stayed put, but I could never reach her.
Until two weeks ago.
Severe panic attacks and depression, and I’m desperate to escape. Nothing I posted was something I could easily disappear into. Just superficial games or something that made me think too much. And then I saw the God of War.
I turned on the game and didn’t get out of my chair for a few hours. I hit the witch house before I stopped playing, and even that was only a short break.
Everything about this game caught my attention. Every little detail. An excellent environment. It’s an amazing story. A fantastic fight. That’s all I’m saying. But one thing stands out.
Fighting.
My friend was the reason I got it in the first place, and that’s one of the reasons I decided to get it back a few weeks ago. He said I wouldn’t be grateful to everyone. He wasn’t wrong.
I have great sympathy for Atreus. Our childhoods are very different, of course, but we were in similar places. Turns out his parents love him, but I was with him for the first half of the game. Seeing Kratos kiss her and then walk away was heartbreaking to me, because I haven’t had a hug in years and my family has never kissed me with real love.
Loneliness. The feeling is ignored. Laurel ordered. Feeling useless if you don’t like your parents. Worrying about being good at something so your parents will like you better. I want to belong. I want you to be loved. The true horror of loneliness (Kratos/Light is what I think). Every part of his character hit me like a hammer (no pun intended) because these characters are inexhaustibly well written.
So…. Thank you, Santa Monica. You helped me escape for a while. It gave me hope for my own miserable life.
Edit: I’m over the tropics, I must say. I’ve got the glove. Every collectible, regardless of the trophy, has taken more time than I care to admit to screaming about Valkyrie, hunting from every angle, reading all the surprisingly childish magazine articles, grinding things out in Niflheim long after that trophy, and so on. Although, if anyone could give me any hints about the Niflheim nornir’s breast that usually breeds in the bases, that would be greatly appreciated.
It can be fun too. The friend I mentioned? We talked about the game at the party when I played it. At least in part. I know a bit about northern mythology because that’s where I’m from, but I don’t have a clear idea where I’m from. I couldn’t tell who Baldur was, at least not until Atreus said his name. My friend kept giving me advice. Nothing. Mythology says the death of his brothers somehow did it. Nothing. He says his brother is blind? It’s Baldur.
Then I asked if any other major or minor characters were introduced. He says that Thor is not there, that you don’t see Odin but you feel his presence, but that you encounter various figures from mythology in one form or another. That’s good. That’s good. It’s cool. I’ll ask if Loki is here. And he says, not really. I mean, I don’t think Loki is what he seems to be, but he seems to be at the beginning of the timeline and interfering with events. Maybe Loki’s not ready. …. It’s about Atreus. My friend merely replied: Well, that was fast. Half an hour to find out who Baldur is. Two minutes to find out Boy is Loki.

- Game of the Year: GOW versus RDR2
The choice is simple for me. I haven’t played Red Dead Redemption 1 or any of the Gods of War games, so that’s a completely unbiased opinion. Put your hands down, God of War. For the simple reason that when I got home after a 12 hour shift, I was playing God of War.
- We are reluctant to buy this game.
I’ve been itching to play a game of sailing and exploration for a while now. I’ve been looking at this game a bit and it may start to itch (Raft has kind of…. But it leaves a lot to be desired. Still costs 20 imo). Although some things kept me from buying it and….
