The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT is an advanced, high-end graphics card from AMD. It is designed for high-performance gaming in DirectX 11 and Vulkan applications. The card has a maximum power consumption of 200 watts. The core clock with boost is up to 1000 MHz, the memory has a maximum capacity of 11GB, and the card has a maximum power consumption of 200 watts.

AMD’s RX 6900 XT, part of the R9 390 series launched earlier this year, is AMD’s first foray into the enthusiast market with an overclockable GPU. It’s the first of its kind to use AMD’s new Polaris architecture, and it’s also the first card to be part of the enthusiast-focused Radeon RX 500 series.

It’s not very often that you see a graphics card from AMD being talked about on a processor-focused site such as ours, but in that case the card in question is the Radeon RX 6900 XT, a mid-range card that launched in March 2018. This evaluation is not about the Radeon RX 6900 or the RX 6900 XT, but more about the latter card. Our goal in this evaluation is to take a look at what you can expect from an “off-the-shelf” Radeon RX 6900 XT overclock, and then comparing it to a reference card to see which is a better choice for yourself.

AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT Video Card Front View with Overclocked Text

Introduction

We tested the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT video card on a variety of games at 1440p, 4K, with Ray Tracing, and FSR. We compared it against a Radeon RX 6800 XT and a GeForce RTX 3090. The one thing we didn’t do was try to overclock it to see how far we could go. The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT we have is an AMD-built video card that follows AMD’s standard construction architecture.

In today’s evaluation, we’ll overclock the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT as much as possible and re-benchmark it in each game. In Godfall, we’ll test it at 1440p, 4K, and with Ray Tracing and FSR. We’ll utilize the GPU comparison we used in our comprehensive evaluation. We’ll see how it stacks up against a GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3090 GAMING OC and an AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT. This allows us to measure how big of an improvement we receive from overclocking and how it compares to other flagships when overclocked.

The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT is AMD’s current flagship video card, and it represents the best of what AMD has to offer in terms of performance for gamers right now. It had a starting price of $999. The Radeon RX 6900 XT has 80 Compute Units, 5,120 Stream Processors, 80 RT Cores, 128 ROPs, and 320 TMUs, and is based on NAVI 21. The Infinity Cache is 128MB. It has a boost clock of 2250MHz and a gaming clock of up to 2015MHz. Onboard memory is 16GB of GDDR6 operating at 16GHz on a 256-bit bus.

How to Overclock an AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT Graphics Card

We must utilize AMD’s Radeon Software as part of its Adrenalin driver to overclock the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT, particularly the Manual Performance Tuning Controls.

You can see what we got with our maximum overclock on the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT in the screenshot above. To begin with, the Power Tuning limit allows us to raise the Power Limit by 15%. In addition, we set the fan speed to 100% to achieve the maximum potential overclock. We are unable to raise the GPU Voltage; the maximum setting is 1175mV.

However, we may boost the memory frequency and maximum GPU frequency. The memory frequency, on the other hand, is limited to a low 2150MHz (17.2GHz) maximum potential. Although the RAM is technically capable of greater overclocking, AMD has limited it to a maximum of 17.2GHz rather than the default of 16GHz. The bandwidth has increased from 512GB/s to 550GB/s as a result of the memory frequency boost. It wasn’t much, but it was the best we could do.

On the GPU frequency slider, we were able to get it up to a Max Frequency of 2720MHz. Look at the graph below to understand what this means in terms of gameplay. We discovered that when the slider was set to 2750MHz, games would freeze up after 10 minutes of play. However, there were no lockups at 2720MHz, and it performed well.

You can see how the overclock (orange line) compares to the default clock in the graph above (blue line.) The frequency has increased from approximately 2250-2300MHz to 2400-2450MHz as a result of the overclock.

Keep in mind that the video card’s normal game clock is just 2015MHz, while the boost clock is 2150MHz. This overclock is much higher than the boost clock. This overclock has an average of 2437MHz. We discovered that the average default clock speed is 2286MHz in our comprehensive evaluation. As a result, that’s around a 150MHz overclock, or a 7% increase in GPU frequency.

2437MHz/17.2GHz (GPU/Memory) is our ultimate overclock.

GPU-Z reports a 61c GPU Temperature and an 86c GPU Temperature Hot Spot at 89 percent fan RPM. The GPU Voltage stays unchanged at 1.175V, which is the default. The baseline 256W GPU Chip Power Draw has been raised to 294W.

If you’ve been reading our evaluations of the Radeon RX 8000 series for a few weeks now, you’re probably sick of hearing about how powerful these cards are. The card has beaten all of the Nvidia GTX 1070’s and 1080’s in our benchmarks and, even though it’s just clocked to 1025 MHz, it’s still outperforming the GTX 1060 6GB. But, for the best overclocking potential, you’ll want to start at a higher speed. In our evaluation of the RX 6900 XT, we found that the 1025 MHz stock speed was the sweet spot, delivering the best performance for the price..
